Best Things To Do With Kids In Budapest – Hungarian Railway Museum

Are You Loco for Locomotives? Then Do The Locomotion!

Ok, I'm all out of train puns now. So let's get back on track...

The Hungarian Railway Museum is an interactive museum set in a sprawling park, around 30 minutes by bus from Budapest-Keleti Train Station. As most of the attractions are outdoors, the museum is open from mid-April until the end of October. Be sure to check the weather forecast before you go, and don't forget the sunscreen! There are over 100 trains and vehicles on show in this open-air museum. You can take a ride on a miniature steam or diesel locomotive (garden train), operate a real hand-cart and go for a drive in the vintage rail car (an automobile that runs on rails). Buy tickets for the rides when you pay your entrance fee. The locomotives, including one dating back to 1870, are beautifully preserved. You can climb all over the trains and explore their carriages, giving you a real insight into train travel in the past. The teak dining car built for the Orient Express is especially cool. There's also a great set of wooden trains to play with in one of the exhibition sheds. Every hour, you can hop onto the giant turntable as it turns. It's the perfect place for a picnic, as there are beautiful gardens on site as well as a children's playground. Otherwise, you can grab a bite in the buffet restaurant and snack bar.

From Keleti Train Station (Keleti Pályaudvar) -
Take Bus 30, 30A or 230 (in the direction of Káposztásmegyer, Mogyoródi-patak)
Get off at Rokolya Utca
Walk two blocks east (400 metres)

TIP: There are no signs showing you the way to the museum from Rokolya Utca. Write down the name of the museum in Hungarian 'Vasúttörténeti Park', so you can ask the locals for directions if you get lost.
