Best Things To Do With Kids In Florence – Mercato Centrale (Central Market)

Part food court and part cultural centre, the top floor of the Mercato Centrale in Florence is a food lover's wonderland. In this beautiful 19th century cast iron and glass building, you can observe all manner of culinary artisans in action. The atmospheric seating hall has room for up to 500 people, and there's something for every taste including wood-fired pizza, handmade pasta, truffles, ice cream, craft beer, steak, seafood, freshly baked bread, cheeses and salami to name just a few. A must-try is the Lampredotto from Il Lampredotto di Lorenzo Nigro. Just don't tell your kids that it's a tripe sandwich, and they'll devour it. It can get super busy, so make sure you secure a table before you go hunting and gathering. The food hall is a great place to eat with kids, as it's loud and carefree and no one will mind if they make a mess. Plus there are high chairs available. There's elevators and escalators for easy access to the second floor, and also public toilets (a godsend in Europe!). The gourmet food court is open every day from 10:00am to midnight. Downstairs, there's a fresh food market which is brilliant for self-caterers.
