How Not To Travel Light In Venice

We arrived in Venice on a clammy midsummer's afternoon with 2 suitcases, 2 backpacks, 2 car seats, a double stroller, 2 stuffed toy Ewoks and 2 kids. It was only a 900 metre walk to our Airbnb apartment in Campo San Giacomo dell'Orio from our rental car drop-off point in Piazzale Roma. Just an 11 minute stroll according to Google Maps - very doable. Plus we'd avoid a hefty water taxi fare, which could be better spent on gelato and scary Venetian Eyes Wide Shut masks.

But then came the BRIDGES. And the STAIRS. And the GETTING LOST IN THE LABYRINTHINE CALLES. And the EWOK DROPPING.

45 physically taxing minutes later, we arrived at our destination. Red faced and panting, with our hair plastered to our sweaty heads, we no longer needed Venetian masks to look scary.

Today's lesson - when in Venice, don't go full tourist. Travel light, or failing that, find accommodation that's close to your point of arrival.
